PHLAI - Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Responsible and Practical Artificial Intelligence
October 28, 2020
We are excited to announce our fourth annual PHLAI conference. The focus of this year’s online conference is "Responsible and Practical Artificial Intelligence."
Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities to make a positive impact on the lives of people around the world, from business to healthcare to education. At the same time, to fulfill its positive potential, we also need to answer questions about the fairness, interpretability, privacy, and security of these systems, as well as how to make machine learning work in the wild by translating our theoretical advances into practical solutions that everyone can benefit from.
Speakers and Presenters
Hilary Mason is Data Scientist in Residence at Accel Partners, a leading Silicon Valley venture capital firm. From 2009 to 2013, she served as Chief Scientist for bitly, the popular link-shortening service, where she continues to work as Scientist Emeritus, advising a team that studies attention on the internet in realtime.
A genuinely charming speaker who resonates with both tech and nonspecialist audiences, Hilary speaks about the challenges and the rewards of working with big data, with a special focus on machine learning.

Ashu is also co-author of the book “What’s Next for You - The Eightfold Path to Transforming the Way We Hire and Manage Talent.”
Since joining Comcast in 2001, Dave has built software and data solutions across multiple Comcast products. His innovative approach to problem-solving has resulted in 13 granted patents and 15 patents pending. Prior to joining the AI team, David worked for Comcast's Intellectual Property team and helped other Comcast inventors turn their ideas into potentially patentable solutions that leveraged technologies including machine learning, virtual reality, and wireless.
Dave holds a Master's Degree in Information Systems from the University of Colorado at Denver, and is a U.S. Army veteran. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife and son.
I graduated from the Pierre et Marie Curie University in the early 1980s. I have always enjoyed resolving difficult problems with varying degrees of success of course! My two most noteworthy achievements are a DNA award for my Synteny Viewer work at Celera Genomics (2005) and a technical Emmy award for organizing a vendor bake-off for recommender systems at Comcast (2012).
My personal motivation for organizing the competition was to prove that the personalization algorithm I invented (“Yours Truly”) was among the best. As I enter the last segment of my career, and as I realize that my ability to learn new stuff is getting painfully slower, I switched to a more noble activity: the sharing of my knowledge and intuition by teaching Machine Learning at Comcast.
